FT MORNING SEMINAR

FT Urban Regeneration in the UK - The Path to Economic Recovery
2 December 2009, Kings Place, London

These are challenging times for urban planners, property developers and local authorities, as the global recession has created a landscape in the UK of ultra-tight liquidity, stagnating real estate values and socio-economic strains due to massive corporate restructuring.

Amid these constraints, many regeneration projects in the UK have been put on hold, and many more may be jeopardised unless new ways to maintain the pace and intensity of regeneration can be found. Adding to this complexity, the next phase of the European emissions trading scheme (ETS) will be extended to cover buildings, making energy efficiency and sustainability a neccssary aspect of new urban design.

Chaired by Daniel Thomas, Property Correspondent of the Financial Times, this morning seminar brings together senior figures from across the UK to discuss strategies for enhancing the economic vitality of the UK's urban centres in today's challenging economy, including:

  • Senior national and municipal policy-makers
  • Urban planners
  • Property developers
  • Architects
  • Sustainability experts

By examining some of the most innovative and successful urban renewal initiatives in the UK, panellists will debate complex issues such as:

  • Investing in urban regeneration - which business and finance models work best in the current economy: the role of public-private partnerships
  • Green living: are there ways to ensure low carbon developments are commercially viable, and a win-win solution for all parties?
  • What does it take to design a successful public space, and what are the emerging innovations in urban and building design?
  • How can effective urban planning and innovative design elements, such as the use of lighting, help offset crime and other socio-economic challenges?
  • Does the collapse of the high street present new opportunities to rethink our approach to planning, design and use of public spaces?
