Panel: Innovations in Sustainable Finance - Private Equity Investments in Emerging Markets

The arrival of private equity as an important source of financing for small and growing enterprises in emerging markets has been one of the most innovative developments in sustainable finance in recent years. SMEs have a vital role to play in the economy as creators of both economic and social capital. Often viewed as too risky by commercial banks, and beyond the scope and expertise of microfinance institutions, their ability to expand and grow is hindered by lack of access to capital. Pioneering private equity firms provide a crucial role in closing the financing gap by finding significant opportunities for capital growth, and play a vital development role through the stimulation of innovation, entrepreneurship and economic growth.

  • Assessing the economics of SME investing in emerging markets. Can SME investors make adequate returns on investments? What are the risk mitigating instruments and models required for serving the needs of entrepreneurs in emerging markets?
  • How can the institutional, legal and fiscal framework support the participation of private equity in emerging markets?
  • Creating and sustaining demand for private equity solutions - what is the role of the private sector and family owned businesses?

Panel: Housing/Shelter for All - The Next Frontier in Sustainable Finance

Adequate shelter, and the availability of finance to acquire it, is vital to economic and individual human development. It enables good health, access to education, savings and collateral, whilst creating multiplier effects for economies in terms of productivity, economic stimulus and job creation. An estimated 1bn people worldwide live in inadequate housing. Existing models for the provision of affordable housing are broken and need to be reformed. The recent financial and economic crisis has severely constrained the ability of governments worldwide to provide much needed solutions. How can the financial services sector respond?

  • What are the alternative models/approaches to finance low-income housing apart from traditional mortgage lending and microfinance solutions?
  • What products are required to meet the needs of low-income housing? How do you identify and mitigate the risks?
  • What is the international experience, and how can the developed and developing nations learn from them?

Panel: Closing the Water Resources Gap - The Role for Financial Institutions

With an estimated 40% of the global population living in water stressed areas by 2025, the need to satisfy humanity's growing water demands will be one of the most difficult and important challenges of this century. Water scarcity has spread rapidly to many parts of the world, as consumption levels increase against a fixed supply of renewable fresh water. New approaches to using, managing, and slowing the growth in human demand for water are needed. Financial institutions and investors can exercise considerable influence over investment and management decisions in this vital arena, benefitting both their own business, their clients and the environment.
  • What are the key risks and opportunities that water scarcity poses for financial institutions and investors?
  • What creative solutions are required to address the issue of water scarcity, and what role can financial institutions and investors play?
  • How effective are market mechanisms, e.g. water pricing and trading, as potential solutions to the challenge of water scarcity?
