Dr Welber Barral

Welber Barral is the Secretary of International Trade, Ministry of Development, Industry and Trade for Brazil.
Academic posts he has held include Professor of International Trade Law, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC); Adjunct Professor of International Law/Trade and Development - American University and a visiting lecturer at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná (Brazil), Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (Brazil), and Universidad de Valencia (Spain).
As a Legal Consultant, he has been advisor to law firms on international trade issues and international contracts. He is a Member of the Corte de Mediação e Arbitragem de Santa Catarina; Câmara de Arbitragem de Minas Gerais; Câmara de Mediação e Arbitragem da Associação Comercial do Paraná.
Mr Barral was a Member of the Project Selection Committee for the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (Tokyo, Japan), July 1998 and July 1999.
Welber Barral's honours list includes the Prêmio Moinho Santista Juventude (2001) - São Paulo State Government/Fundação Bunge; Mención de honor - from the Argentinean Ministry of Economy, for the work Tratamiento de las prácticas de dumping y subvenciones en los procesos de integración (1999).
He was also an Honoured professor in the UFSC Law School Classes of 2001, 2000, and 1996.

Henrique de Campos Meirelles

Henrique de Campos Meirelles has been Governor of the Central Bank of Brazil since January 2003.
Prior to this position, he was President of FleetBoston's Corporate and Global Bank and of BankBoston Corporation.
Mr Meirelles was also a member of the Advisory Boards of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, the Sloan School of Management of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Carroll School of Management of the Boston College, as well as a member of the Board of Trustees of the New England Conservatory of Music and of the Institute of Contemporary Arts of Boston.
Mr Meirelles holds an Honorary Degree from Bryant College.
He was elected Congressman in Brazil in 2002.
Among other awards, Mr Meirelles was chosen as "Brazilian of the year 2008" by ISTOÉ magazine, "Central Bank Governor of the Year 2007" by Euromoney and "Financier of the Year 2008" by Latin Trade Bravo.

Conrado Engel

Conrado Engel took over the position of HSBC Bank Brazil President and CEO in June 2009. Mr Engel joined HSBC Group in October 2003. From January 2007 to May 2009, he was based in Hong Kong, as Head of PFS in the Asia-Pacific region.
Mr Engel started his career in 1981 with Citibank. He was also Head of Credit Cards with Banco Nacional e Unibanco, from 1992 to 1997.
In 1998, Mr Engel was nominated President of the consumer finance of Losango, which became part of HSBC Bank Brasil as a result of the acquisition of Lloyds TSB assets in Brazil by the Group.
From August 2004 until his move to Hong Kong, he was a member of HSBC Bank Brasil Executive Committee and Head of PFS in Brazil.
Mr Engel graduated in aeronautical engineering from ITA (Technological Institute of Aviation).

He started his career in Advertising as a copywriter. Internationally recognised for his prominent role in advertising campaigns, such as "Hitler" for the newspaper Folha de São Paulo, Mr. Guanaes has increasingly gained recognition for his business enterprises over the last few years.

Jonathan Wheatley

Jonathan Wheatley was appointed Brazil correspondent in 2005.
Mr Wheatley has lived in Brazil since 1992 and first worked for the FT as Deputy Brazil Correspondent between 1994 and 1998.
He was Brazil Bureau Chief for Business Week magazine between 2001 and 2002. As a freelancer, his work was published by the FT, The Banker (an FT publication), Business Week, Latin Finance, The Economist Intelligence Unit, The Economist and others.
He previously worked as a researcher, reporter and producer in television documentaries, news and current affairs in London.
Mr Wheatley graduated from Durham University with a degree in English language and literature.
