Richard Lapper
Southern Africa Bureau Chief
Financial Times

Richard Lapper was appointed Southern Africa bureau chief for the Financial Times in October 2008, having spent 10 years as Latin America editor, based in Sao Paulo, Brazil.   Prior to joining the FT in 1990, he was a correspondent for a number of publications, living and working in Central America between 1981 and 1983.

Lapper has a BA in Sociology from Liverpool University.
 

 


Conrado Engel
CEO and President
HSBC Brazil

Conrado Engel took over the position of HSBC Bank Brazil President and CEO in June 2009. Mr Engel joined HSBC Group in October 2003. From January 2007 to May 2009, he was based in Hong Kong, as Head of PFS in the Asia-Pacific region.

Mr Engel started his career in 1981 with Citibank. He was also Head of Credit Cards with Banco Nacional e Unibanco, from 1992 to 1997.

In 1998, Mr Engel was nominated President of the consumer finance of Losango, which became part of HSBC Bank Brasil as a result of the acquisition of Lloyds TSB assets in Brazil by the Group.

From August 2004 until his move to Hong Kong, he was a member of HSBC Bank Brasil Executive Committee and Head of PFS in Brazil.

Mr Engel graduated in aeronautical engineering from ITA (Technological Institute of Aviation).

 

Krishna Patel,
Group General Manager, Chief Executive Officer, Africa
The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited

Krishna Patel is currently Group General Manager, Chief Executive Officer, Africa for The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited.

Krishna started his career in London as an analyst in the US Aerospace and oil industry at Lloyd's Bank International.  He then went on to become a Fund Manager with specific responsibilities for Lloyd's Bank Income and Growth Funds.  He subsequently joined James Capel & Co as Partner with responsibility for Derivatives and Principal Risk.  When James Capel became part of the HSBC Group, Krishna's career took him to a variety of roles culminating as Chief Executive, HSBC James Capel in 1997.

Krishna was appointed Group General Manager of HSBC Holdings plc in 2000.  In 2001 Krishna was appointed Chief Executive, Corporate Finance Division & Equities of HSBC Investment Bank plc.  From 2001 - 2003, Krishna was Chairman, Global Investment Banking Division of HSBC Investment Bank plc and in 2003 appointed Chairman, Corporate, Investment Banking and Markets, Emerging Europe and Africa.

 

Paul Shipokosa Mashatile
Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture

Paul Shipokosa Mashatile has a long and distinguished history of participation in the liberation struggle and in the post-apartheid government.

He was the founding President of the Alexandra Youth Congress in 1983. During this time he was also assistant general secretary for the then Southern Transvaal branch of the United Democratic Front.

After the ban on the ANC and SACP was lifted in 1990, Mashatile was appointed interim secretary of the SACP in the former Transvaal. He also served on the interim leadership group of the ANC.
 
In 1991 and 1992 he was head of political education of the ANC in Gauteng and became provincial secretary of the ANC from 1992 to 1998, when he was elected Deputy Chairperson of the party in the province.

He is currently the Chairperson of the ANC in Gauteng.

In 1994 Mashatile became a member of the Gauteng provincial legislature as leader of the house.
 
He has served in the Gauteng Cabinet in various capacities first as the MEC for Safety, then MEC for Public Transport, Roads and Works, MEC for Housing as well as MEC Finance and Economic Affairs, before taking over as Premier of Gauteng following the resignation of Mbhazima Shilowa.

Mashatile is currently serving as the Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture.

 

José Vicente de Sá Pimentel
Brazilian Ambassador to South Africa

José Vicente de Sá Pimentel is the Brazilian Ambassador to South Africa based in Pretoria. Prior to his current position, he was Ambassador to New Delhi and has previously held senior positions in the United States and Europe.

He has written various publications on Brazils position in the world including Relations between Brazil and Sub-Saharian Africa.
