Innovation - Paving a New Way to Patient-Centric Healthcare
12 November 2009, Conrad Brussels

The global healthcare industry is under pressure as governments around the world struggle to keep up with the soaring costs of healthcare and growing patient expectations for higher quality, more personalised care. Advances in technology are transforming the way healthcare can be delivered, freeing it from a traditional, facility-based approach, and enabling healthcare to be delivered in new ways, and in new settings. Patient-centric and preventative care are being proposed as cost-effective solutions but implementation challenges are formidable and cost benefits will not be seen in the short term.

EU decision makers, healthcare innovators and professionals have a vital role to play in transforming incumbent healthcare systems and motivating acceptance of new patient-centric approaches. Chaired by Andrew Jack, Pharmaceuticals and Healthcare Correspondent of the Financial Times, the meeting will bring together representatives from healthcare and health insurance sectors, senior policy advisors and decision makers representing the EU, national governments and patient group representatives, to explore how Europe can take the lead in policy initiatives to drive innovative and more efficient healthcare delivery models.

Themes to be addressed will include:

  • If health is wealth, how can we increase investment in health innovation?
  • What will be the role of the new European Parliament 2009-2014 in fostering innovation in the healthcare sector?
  • Are European reimbursement models fostering innovation? What incentives can be created to motivate change and to secure wider acceptance to a new approach to healthcare?
  • Are there examples of new delivery models and innovative approaches already in existence in Europe? Can these be implemented in a wider context?
  • How do patients define patient-centric care? What does patient empowerment actually mean?
  • Is the European workforce for health ready for patient-centric healthcare? Do we need new skills, roles and responsibilities for healthcare/care professionals?
  • How can technology help achieve the vision of patient-centric care?
  • Is there a need for moving healthcare outside of traditional, institutional care?
  • What is the EU doing to support patient-centric care?
