ETNO-Financial Times 2011 CEO Summit
CEOs from leading telecoms operators and ICT equipment manufacturers from Europe and beyond discuss the future of the digital economy

Monday 3rd October 2011, The Square, Brussels

Chief Executive Officers of telecoms operators and ICT equipment manufacturers will gather on October 3rd in Brussels at the Summit hosted by ETNO and the Financial Times. The CEO Summit will build upon the CEO Roundtable hosted by Commissioner Kroes on July 13th and will facilitate further input from industry on how to achieve the Digital Agenda targets.

"Starting from the industry recommendations presented at the CEO Roundtable closing meeting, the aim of the ETNO-FT Summit is to further stimulate the debate amongst industry players on how policies can contribute to boosting private investment in high speed broadband networks and encourage new business models and services to emerge," says Luigi Gambardella, ETNO Executive Board Chairman.

"Data traffic is booming, meaning that business models should develop in such a way that the major infrastructure costs associated with the increase in data are covered. Infrastructure investments are driven by expectations of appropriate returns: if more bandwidth is needed, operators need to be able to monetise their investment in making such additional bandwidth available", added Gambardella.

The ETNO-FT CEO Summit aims at fostering the dialogue between all actors in the Internet eco-system, from network and service providers to ICT equipment manufacturers and over the top players, to debate how the Internet's current commercial model needs to evolve and how new revenues can be generated to support the need for infrastructure investments.

The Summit will be opened by Neelie Kroes, Vice President of the European Commission for the Digital Agenda. To set the scene for the panel discussions, Professor Jonathan Liebenau from the London School of Economics will give a presentation on the future Internet models and trends. Chief Executive Officers of leading telecoms operators and ICT equipment manufacturers confirmed so far include:

ETNO-Financial Times 2011 CEO Summit
Towards a Common Goal: Achieving a Sustainable Internet Model

Monday 3rd October 2011, The Square, Brussels

Brussels - How to ensure a sustainable internet model where all players of the Internet eco-system contribute to investment challenges of the sector will be the main theme of the 2011 CEO Summit hosted by ETNO and the Financial Times with the participation of Commissioner Kroes as keynote speaker.

Luigi Gambardella, ETNO Executive Board Chairman said: Achieving a sustainable model for the development of the Internet should be a common goal for the whole sector. A new equilibrium needs to be found to ensure that players generating large amounts of data traffic also contribute to the investment challenges ahead. The ETNO - Financial Times CEO Summit will be a unique occasion to foster the dialogue between e-communications network operators, equipment manufacturers and Internet players.

Jayne Van Hoen, Managing Director Conferences & Events, Financial Times, said: As the explosion of data traffic threatens to overwhelm the existing infrastructure of network operators and pressure mounts on them to increase their spending on high speed broadband networks, the Financial Times - in partnership with ETNO - is delighted to provide a platform for all players in the internet ecosystem to exchange views on how the internet can continue to develop sustainably.

Panel 1 - Making the Internet more sustainable: How should the current commercial model evolve? This panel session will examine what conditions may attract investment in networks and how more balanced economic incentives and stimulate all players along the value chain to contribute to investment challenge.

Panel 2 - Enabling a sustainable global digital society: Meeting the demand for services and products. This panel session will look at the new innovative services that will be offered over high speed broadband networks, generating new revenues while at the same time enabling sustainable economic development and social progress.

On the occasion of the ETNO-Financial Times CEO Summit, the London School of Economics will give a presentation on the future model for the Internet and trends.
