About ExxonMobil

ExxonMobil is the world's largest publicly traded international petroleum and natural gas company. We operate facilities and market products in most countries around the world, explore for oil and natural gas on six continents, and employ more than 80,000 people, including 16,500 scientists and engineers.

To help meet the world's growing energy needs, ExxonMobil is involved in the discovery, development and delivery of petroleum and natural gas, and the manufacture and marketing of petroleum products. We are a major manufacturer of commodity and specialty petrochemicals, and have interests in several electric power generation facilities.

Our extensive research programs support the continuous improvement of our operations and explore emerging energy sources and technologies. Over the past five years, ExxonMobil has invested more than $5 billion in technology and its applications.

Energy Technology

ExxonMobil is making the most of new technologies to expand energy supplies, increase efficiency, and reduce emissions.

Breakthrough innovations - including some pioneered by ExxonMobil - have helped keep pace with rising global energy demand by making more energy supplies available, while also reducing the environmental impacts of energy development. As a significant portion of the world's oil and gas resources is located in challenging environments such as deep under the ocean floor or in Arctic conditions, new technologies are needed to produce energy safely and reliably.

By applying new energy-efficient technologies, we use less energy to run our business. For example, with cogeneration, we can produce electricity to power our operations while also capturing heat to make steam to transform raw materials into consumer products. This provides a more efficient power source than purchasing from a local utility, in some cases by up to 50 percent more efficient.

ExxonMobil is partnering with automakers to actively support initiatives to reduce consumer emissions from the use of our products in the transportation sector. Using our expertise not only in fuels and lubricants, but also in chemicals and plastics, we are advancing new technologies to make vehicles more fuel efficient.

We are also sponsoring research into technology breakthroughs such as biofuel production from photosynthetic algae, generation of hydrogen on-board vehicles to power fuel cells, and development of improved lithium-ion battery separator film for hybrid electric cars.
