With an area of almost 600 000 square miles and 7,8 million inhabitants, Québec is the largest of Canada's ten provinces. Its Northern Region - which covers over 425 000 square miles representing fourth times the territory of UK - remains virtually untouched, with the exception of major hydraulic, mineral and forest developments.
The Québec Government intends to enhance the potential of this territory through an ambitious development project: the Plan Nord. According to the basic principles of sustainable development its aim is to open a new area for development in Québec that will integrate numerous sectors of activity. Public and private investments worth up to 50 billion Canadian dollars by 2035 could be made to develop energy and mining projects in Northern Québec. Indeed, in 2008, 60% of the investments made in Québec's mineral sector were in the North.
The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources is Georgia's key policy maker in defining energy strategy, ensuring energy security, overseeing the country's natural resources, and helping to protect its economic vitality. Reforms undertaken by the Government and Ministry in recent years have considerably limited the State's involvement in the energy sector - deregulating the entire sector and encouraging private sector investment opportunities. Presently the Ministry's primary objectives are to promote development and investment opportunities in renewable energy (hydropower and wind), rationally exploit 'greenfield' development potential of approximately 20TWh, expand the export capabilities of the country, effectively manage the country's natural resources, and ensure energy independence and security for Georgia.
