Michael Oxman
Director, Energy & Extractives, BSR
With more than 15 years of corporate and field experience in the oil and gas industry, Michael helps clients assess and manage their social impacts and opportunities wherever they do business. He also has significant experience in strategic analysis and financial modeling of fiscal terms within the energy sector.
At BSR, Michael specializes in conducting country-entry risk assessments; supporting local content activities; developing community-engagement initiatives; and providing strategic analysis of social responsibility policies, frameworks, and reports for a broad range of energy and mining clients. Working with companies such as Chevron, Hess, BP, ExxonMobil, Shell, Occidental, Goldcorp, and Marathon, Michael has led BSR teams at both corporate headquarters and in field-based activities for mining, oil and gas, and renewable energy projects. His projects at BSR have ranged from conducting strategic and community assessments of the local operating environment to ascertaining the capacity of local suppliers, NGOs, and training institutions.
Prior to joining BSR in 2006, Michael spent eight years at Chevron in a variety of planning roles. He was Chevron's Senior Planning Analyst for the Eurasia Business Unit in Kazakhstan, and later served as the unit's liaison to upstream headquarters in California. Michael was also responsible for fiscal modeling of upstream opportunities, and he served as one of the primary developers of an internal process for improved integration of above-ground risk management into the strategies of several international business units. Michael also worked at Price Waterhouse, where he supported the Kazakhstan government on large-scale oil and gas transactions, and at the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), where he provided U.S. clients with political risk insurance for international investments.
Michael holds a bachelor's degree in Russian Area Studies from Trinity College, a master's degree in International Affairs from Columbia University, and an M.B.A. from the Jones Graduate School at Rice University.
