Investing in a New Energy Future

The world faces two major energy challenges - ensuring a secure supply of fuel and electricity for future generations and reversing the course of global warming. Both involve lowering our dependence on fossil fuels and developing alternative, low-carbon solutions. However, as policy-makers debate the best way to encourage energy efficiency, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the adoption of renewable and clean energy technologies, it is clear that progress will depend not just on governments but also on private sector financing and investment, with support from the capital markets.

Chaired by Ed Crooks, Energy Editor of the Financial Times, this half-day forum gathered senior economists, regulators, private investors and executives from the energy and financial sectors to discuss the latest investment trends in clean technology and energy infrastructure, the most attractive short- and long-term opportunities, and the challenges that need to be overcome for those opportunities to be realized. In the case of Canada, a major oil-producing country, how does one reconcile the need for energy diversity with the continuing value requirements of the traditional energy industry and its investors?
