Simon Gleeson
Partner, International Financial Markets Group
Clifford Chance

Simon Gleeson joined Clifford Chance in 2007 as a partner in the firm's International Financial Markets group. He specialises in financial markets law and regulation, was seconded to the Financial Services Authority in 1999-2000 to assist with the development of the market abuse regime, and advised the World Economic Forum on their report on their 2009 Report on The New Global Financial Architecture. He has advised Governments, regulators and public bodies as well as banks, investment firms, fund managers and other financial institutions on a wide range of regulatory issues.  He is a member of the Financial Markets Law Committee and the Institute for International Finance's Regulatory Committee, has written numerous books and articles on financial regulation, and is the author of "International Regulation of Banking", recently published by Oxford University Press.

 



Juan Grana
Director, Capital Products
Credit Suisse

Juan Grana is a Director in Credit Suisses Credit Structuring team with a focus on risk and capital management solutions for banks. He was previously co-head of Capital and Credit Risk Modelling where he had responsibility for projects including Economic Capital methodology, credit portfolio modelling and leading CSs Basel II IRB implementation.
 
Prior to joining Credit Suisse in 2002, Mr Grana worked as a consultant in Oliver, Wyman's risk practice.
 
Mr Grana received an MPhys in Physics from the University of Oxford.

 


Patrick Jenkins
Banking Editor
Financial Times

Patrick Jenkins was appointed banking editor for the Financial Times in June 2009.  He covers major global banks with a particular focus on Europe, as well as leading the FT's 10-strong global financial services reporting team.  Prior to this post he was companies editor and assistant editor, and before that he was the editor of international company news.

Mr Jenkins joined the FT Group in 1996 as editor of the newsletter FT world insurance report, before becoming UK companies reporter in 2000. Prior to taking up the post as international company news editor, Mr Jenkins spent four years in Germany as Frankfurt correspondent for the FT.



Angela Knight, CBE
Chief Executive
British Bankers Association

After leaving Bristol University with an honours degree in chemistry, Angela Knight worked for the American industrial gas company Air Products Ltd. She was the product development manager for the application and sales of nitrogen as an inert carrier during the treatment of ferrous metal components. 
Ms Knight went on to set up and was Chief Executive of a specialist contract heat treatment company treating precision engineering components - Cook & Knight Metallurgical Processors Ltd - and associated process plant manufacturing company.
 
From 1987 to 1992, she was Councillor and Chief Whip on Sheffield City Council. She entered Parliament in 1992 as MP for Erewash and was Economic Secretary to the Treasury between 1995 and 1997, when she lost her seat at the General Election. She was the Chief Executive of the Association of Private Client Investment Managers and Stockbrokers from September 1997 to December 2006.
 
Ms Knight is currently the Chief Executive of the British Bankers Association. She is also a non-executive director on the boards of IFSL, Brewin Dolphin plc and the Financial Services Skills Council.
 

Alain Laurin
Senior Vice President, Credit Policy
Moody's Investors Service

 
Alain Laurin is the Regional Credit Officer for the Europe, Middle East and African region (EMEA) responsible for ensuring compliance with existing rating methodologies, supporting the development and implementation of analytical initiatives and facilitating global rating consistency for Moody's Banking and Finance rating teams in EMEA.
Prior to joining Moody's in August 2008, Mr Laurin was at Banque of France for 25 years where he held several positions in the International department - including a seven-year secondment to the World Bank - and at the Banking Commission where he was Director of off-site supervision between 2006 and 2007.
 
Mr Laurin holds a Master Degree in Economics (University of Bordeaux) and Sciences Po (Bordeaux).




James Leigh-Pemberton
CEO, UK
Credit Suisse

 
James H. Leigh-Pemberton is a Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Credit Suisse in the United Kingdom, based in London. In this role, Mr. Leigh-Pemberton is responsible for developing the Bank's client relationships in Private Banking, Investment Banking and Asset Management in the UK. He is also a member of the EMEA Operating Committee.
 
Prior to his current role, Mr Leigh-Pemberton held several senior roles within the EMEA Investment Banking Department, including Head of European Investment Banking Department, Head of European Equity Capital Markets and Chairman of UK Investment Banking.
 
Mr. Leigh-Pemberton joined Credit Suisse First Boston in 1994. Prior to joining CSFB, Mr. Leigh-Pemberton was a Director of S.G. Warburg Securities, where he worked for 15 years. Mr. Leigh-Pemberton received his M.A. from Oxford University.



Thomas Murphy
Head of Structured Transactions
Lloyds Banking Group

Thomas Murphy joined Lloyds Banking Group in February 2004 and is Managing Director, Head of Structured Transactions Group. He manages a team of 52 professionals across the Structured Transactions Group and Fund Investments.

 

Mr Murphy was Managing Director and Head of the Structured Products Group at DLJ and later CSFB where he worked for five years and was based both in New York and London.  The team specialised in Structured Finance solutions for Global 500 clients.  Prior to DLJ/CSFB, he was Managing Director and Co-head of Citigroup's Capital Structuring team in New York. Mr Murphy was a founding member of Citicorp's Capital Structuring team in 1991.  He worked at Citicorp from 1986 to 1998.

 

Mr Murphy's experience includes many aspects of structured finance often dealing with Capital, accounting, tax and regulatory issues.  He has significant experience in private equity, derivatives, securitisation finance, leasing, leveraged finance, etc.  He has closed numerous transactions in the U.S., U.K. and across most of Western Europe.



Peter Praet
Executive Director
National Bank of Belgium

Peter Praet was appointed executive director of the National Bank of Belgium in 2000 and is responsible for financial stability. In 2002 he was also appointed to the Management Committee of the Belgian Banking, Finance, and Insurance Commission (CBFA), where he is responsible for prudential policy for banking and insurance.

Before joining the National Bank, Mr Praet served as chief of cabinet for the Belgian Minister of Finance from 1999-2000, as chief economist of Générale de Banque and Fortis Bank from 1988-1999, as professor of economics at the Université Libre de Bruxelles from 1980-1987, and as economist at the International Monetary Fund from 1978-1980. He currently teaches money and banking at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, and from 2001-2004 he held the Chair of Business Ethics at the Faculté polytechnique and the Solvay Business School of the Université Libre de Bruxelles.
 
Mr Praet serves on several high-level international committees, including the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, the Committee on Payment and Settlement Systems, the Committee on the Global Financial System, the Committee of European Banking Supervisors, and the Banking Supervision Committee of the ESCB as Chair. He is an alternate director of the Committee of G10 Governors and the International Monetary and Financial Committee. He is also co-chair of the Research Task Force of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision.

Mr Praet is a member of the board of the European think tank Bruegel (Brussels European Global Economic Laboratory).


 

Paul Sharma
Director, Prudential Policy Division
Financial Services Authority, UK

Paul Sharma has held the position of Director, Prudential Policy at the Financial Services Authority ("FSA") since April 2008. He leads a division of over 140 policy staff responsible for capital, liquidity and client money applicable to banks, insurance companies and other financial firms. Paul also leads on the FSA's negotiation and implementation of the EU Solvency II. Prior to his promotion to Director, Paul was the head of the FSA's Risk Review Department of specialist quantitative and qualitative risk professionals.
