In the business world, boldness matters more than ever...

The willingness to venture where others fear to tread and to push the edge of the proverbial envelope. These are the qualities that will make the vital difference in these challenging economic times. That is why the Financial Times is partnering with ArcelorMittal on the Boldness in Business awards, an annual venture that will highlight companies and entrepreneurs who are innovative and dynamic.

As a global news organisation, the FT has followed its instincts and searched for boldness around the world. We are proud these awards feature candidates from Europe, the US, the Middle East and Asia. The winners are selected by a panel of distinguished judges who based their decision on a short-list drawn up by senior FT journalists.

The global financial crisis has, of course, raised serious questions about the quality of decision-taking and risk-management in business, particularly in the banking and financial services sector. But boldness should never be confused with recklessness. As Goethe wrote, boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Pursued with due care and attention, boldness can be a transformational force in business, finance and technology.

What are the yardsticks for measuring boldness in business? To a degree, boldness lies in the eye of the beholder. What may seem smart one day may look short-sighted the next. But our judges looked beyond individual acts or decisions and sought to assess the overall record of companies and entrepreneurs in areas such as innovation, corporate responsibility and the environment. The aim throughout was to measure execution alongside strategic intent.

Thus, the Boldness in Business awards reflect our common desire to interpret the concept of boldness in its widest sense. We hope they will become an annual benchmark for companies, but also an inspiration to individuals in search of excellence.
